Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where did my notes go? I opened the app and nothing is there.

FSNotes works directly with the folders you choose and does not keep a separate hidden copy of your notes. If the app opens with an empty library, your files are usually still in their original location.

First, check that the correct storage folder is selected in FSNotes. If the folder is in iCloud Drive, make sure its files have been downloaded to your device. If it is located on an external drive, reconnect the drive and open FSNotes again.

We recommend keeping a separate backup of important notes. FSNotes can create Git-based backups, but this feature needs to be configured before it can protect your files.

2. The app won’t start. What should I do?

Sorry about that. A very large library or a problematic file can sometimes prevent FSNotes from starting normally.

Try temporarily moving the contents of your storage folder to another location, then launch FSNotes again. If the app starts, return your notes in smaller groups to identify the file or folder causing the problem. You can also try resetting the FSNotes preferences.

If the problem continues, please open a GitHub issue and include your FSNotes version, operating system version, and a description of what happens at launch.

3. Will RTF support return?

FSNotes 7 is focused on plain text and Markdown workflows. RTF support is not currently planned to return.

We understand that some long-time users prefer the previous workflow. Feedback is welcome, but we cannot promise that every feature from an older major version will be restored.

4. I would like a new feature. When will it be added?

FSNotes is maintained by a small team, so stability, performance, and existing features usually take priority over expanding the roadmap. We read feature requests, but cannot promise whether or when a particular idea will be implemented.

The best place to propose an improvement is GitHub Discussions. FSNotes is open source, so well-tested pull requests are also appreciated. You are also welcome to fork the project and adapt it to your own workflow.

6. Does FSNotes fully support iPad features?

The current iPad build does not receive dedicated iPad features such as full keyboard-shortcut coverage or multi-window support. Development is currently focused on macOS and iPhone.

The existing iPad build remains available in the App Store, but we recommend checking that its current capabilities meet your needs before purchasing.
